WEESDev Foundation and FOREP Collaborate in Limbe to Address Climate Change Challenges

Date: October 27, 2023

In a collaborative effort, the WEESDev Foundation joined forces with FOREP at the Limbe Botanic Gardens today to conduct a comprehensive multi-stakeholder workshop focusing on the detrimental impacts of climate change in and around the Limbe municipalities.

The workshop, attended by a diverse group of organizations, community leaders, public waste management teams, and government ministries, centered its discussions on the assessment of various hazards in the Limbe municipalities. Participants delved into the causes, mitigation strategies, and the formulation of community action plans. Special emphasis was placed on community-led environmental education to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices.

Key topics included the identification and discussion of emergency situations such as floods, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. The participants actively engaged in dialogues aimed at understanding the challenges posed by these phenomena and exploring effective solutions.

Among the notable resolutions, participants highlighted the need for disaster preparedness. Specific recommendations included the creation of alternative evacuation routes, a critical consideration given the current reliance on a single entry and exit point for Limbe. Additionally, participants called for a review of the man-made drainage patterns to enhance their effectiveness in mitigating climate-related risks.

The workshop also addressed the significance of respecting environmental regulations, with an emphasis on prohibiting the creation of wetlands and avoiding construction along waterways. These measures aim to safeguard communities from potential hazards associated with improper land use.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both WEESDev Foundation and FOREP to foster resilience in Limbe municipalities in the face of climate change. The workshop’s outcomes are poised to contribute significantly to the ongoing dialogue on sustainable development and environmental protection in the region.
