WEESDev and Partners Empower Kids Through Innovative Waste Management Project

Limbe, December 17, 2023 — In response to the global emergency of climate change caused by anthropogenic factors, WEESDev, in collaboration with FOREP Cameroon and Nature’s Benefit, organized a two-day activity on Thursday, December 14th, and Friday, December 15th, 2023. The event, held at Karata junction in Limbe, aimed to raise awareness about climate change and promote sustainable waste management practices.

The initiative brought together students from GS Down Beach, GS Mabata, and GS Mile One, who actively participated in waste management activities. The focus was on the creative reuse of waste materials, specifically waste tires and plastics, to construct and design innovative plastic Christmas trees.

Participants engaged in hands-on activities such as cutting and shaping plastic bottles into beautiful flower designs, painting the plastics in desired colors, and finally, assembling and decorating the plastic Christmas trees. The project not only addressed the critical issue of improper waste disposal but also provided an educational platform for Climate and Waste Management Literacy.

As part of the program, the students and team members collectively sang waste management-friendly songs, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. The excitement and enthusiasm displayed by both the kids and team members underscored the success of the project.

Speaking about the initiative, a representative from WEESDev expressed optimism, stating, “We hope to expand or replicate this project to other communities, schools, and offices during this Christmas season and in future Christmas seasons. This endeavor aligns with our commitment to building a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.”

The collaboration between WEESDev, FOREP Cameroon, and Nature’s Benefit exemplifies the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. The project not only contributed to waste reduction but also empowered young minds to become advocates for sustainable practices in their communities.
